Cornyn Introduces Bill to Ban Sharia Law

John Cornyn

Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama have introduced the No Sharia Act, which aims to prohibit the application of Sharia Law across the United States.

“Sharia Law is an affront to our Constitution and the values Texans hold close,” said Cornyn. “The No Sharia Act would install commonsense guardrails to ensure Sharia Law is kept out of our justice system and that freedom of religion is preserved. Sharia Law has no place in Texas or America, and this bill would make sure of that.”

The No Sharia Act would:

  • Prohibit courts from enforcing judgments, decrees, or contracts relying on foreign laws that violate the Constitution;
  • Invalidate contract provisions based on foreign laws if they violate Constitutional rights;
  • Bar application of marriage, divorce, custody, adoption, or inheritance if inconsistent with U.S. law.

“Sharia Law is fundamentally anti-American and has no place in our country,” said Tuberville. “If you want to peacefully practice your religion, you have every right to do so under the Constitution. But if you want to come to the United States and advocate for the practice of Sharia Law over U.S. law, you should not be here. We do not want people who chant ‘death to America’ residing in our communities and endangering our families. We must protect American values, not apologize for them. I hope my colleagues can come alongside me in this effort to preserve our Constitutional and God-given rights.”

In April, Cornyn called on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the East Plano Islamic Center’s planned Muslim community, EPIC Ranches City, in Josephine, Texas, following accusations of religious discrimination of Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslims. In May, the DOJ granted Cornyn’s request.
