Cornyn Throws Support Toward Bill Prohibiting Firearm Excise Taxes

U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas has co-sponsored the Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act, which would prohibit states from implementing excise taxes on firearms and ammunition.

“Alongside President Trump, I was proud to champion provisions to reduce the federal suppressor tax to $0 as part of the Working Families Tax Cuts Act,” said Sen. Cornyn. “This bill would take it a step further by ensuring blue states can’t usurp Congressional intent and use state taxes to deter law-abiding Americans from exercising their Second Amendment right to purchase firearms and ammunition.”

According to Cornyn, many blue states, including California, Colorado, Vermont, and New York, have implemented costly excise taxes on firearms and ammunition. Earlier this year, Virginia Democrat state legislators announced they would introduce a bill placing a $500 tax on the sale of firearm suppressors, which could undermine the work  Congressional Republicans did to remove the federal tax on suppressors.

The Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act, Cornyn said, would prevent an infringement on the Second Amendment by prohibiting states from implementing excise taxes on firearms and ammunition.

The Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act is led by Senator Jim Risch (R-ID) and supported by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), and National Rifle Association (NRA).
