The city council will vote this week on increasing East Austin’s Homestead Preservation Reinvestment Zone, which currently takes 10-percent of your property taxes and puts them toward subsidized housing. Council member Greg Casar says actions at the Capitol have forced the city to look outside the box for more money.
Because state law only allows cities to create one of these preservation districts, the city now wants to increase the amount property taxes used to 20-percent.
