When a burglar breaks into a car to grab a package they can clearly see, those in the Austin Police force call it a crime of opportunity.
Officer Brandon Solis said, people should take some extra care before leaving their vehicles behind. As many victims left their vehicle doors completely unlocked. That one of the reasons why APD and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office has put so much effort into social media campaigns reminding drivers and residents to lock their doors, be it car, van, truck or home.
But even if you do lock your doors, sometimes that’s not enough, which is why Officer Solis said you should consider leaving nothing in your car when you leave it, or at least make certain that nothing is in sight.
Solice added, driver should also park in well-lit and well-traveled areas as extra theft deterrent. He also emphasized the importance of reporting a break-in regardless if anything was taken. The officer explained while you may have gotten away with just a broken window, without that crime data police won’t know if your break-in is a fluke or part of a string that could mean extra police patrols in the future.
