Insurance Claims Expected to Jump Across Texas Following Winter Storm

As the snow and ice melts, insurance claims are expected to heat up across Texas.

A winter storm is unique to many other events that require the attention of insurance companies. It can affect both your car and your home at the same time.

The Insurance Council of Texas says it does not believe this winter storm will see as many claims following Winter Storm Uri in 2021, or Winter Storm Mara in 2023, but it does expect an uptick in claims that range from car wrecks to roof damage on homes.

“Those ice dams creeping up through your roof and frozen pipes, as we saw four or five years ago, can be a big disaster,” said Rich Johnson with the Insurance Council of Texas.

For those who rent, renters insurance helps with damage to personal property including furniture and other items, Johnson said. Damage to the property itself is up to the landlord to fix.

Governor Greg Abbott, meanwhile, has expanded Texas’ disaster declaration to 219 counties, adding 85 more in the wake of the widespread snow and ice. The move brings extra state resources, including TxDOT road crews, Texas National Guard, and emergency teams to aid recovery in those affected areas.
