The Austin Police Department is investigating another officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning in southeast Austin. It happened on South Glenn Street in a neighborhood off of McKinney Falls Parkway and 183.
According to police, it began with a call about a woman prowling around a home, and then later breaking into that house. The caller to 911 told dispatchers the woman who was breaking in was her cousin, and that she was armed with a knife.
As the caller remained on the line with 911, she later said she was forced to run away from her house because her cousin began chasing her with a knife. She also reportedly chased several others in the neighborhood, according to Chief of Police Brian Manley.
When officers arrived, they were not sure where the attacker was so they returned to the home where the initial call came from. Manley says officer body camera footage shows the woman coming around the corner from the kitchen, still holding the knife as police continued to give commands to drop it as they backed away. The woman reportedly kept coming toward the officers, at which point a two-year officer with APD opened fire, killing the woman at the scene.
That officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
The woman’s name has not been released but she has been identified as an 18-year-old Hispanic female.
