The City of Round Rock is in the process of collecting data related to excessive noise created by bars in downtown. That was one of the main arguments made by people opposed to extending alcohol sales. Round Rock resident Greg Kerwin told Council, people have a basic right to peace and quiet.
Among the ideas to address noise concerns is to limit sound levels to 50 decibels from the property line after 10:00 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on weekends. Daytime decibels may also be lowered from 80 to 75.
Some Round Rock bar owners are concerned that changes to the noise ordinance could drive customers away and negate the extra profit that may come from new extended hours for alcohol sales. But residents like Kerwin feel the city is catering to the wants of only a few bars at the expense of a peaceful night sleep for people near downtown
