The Austin Chamber of Commerce hopes Texas Lawmakers accomplish three big ticket items during the upcoming legislative session.
Chief among them is getting the state to stop leaning on local communities so much for school finance.
The Chamber’s Drew Scheberlie said it likes the recommendations that would give property tax payers a break from carrying more of the school finance burden. He explained Gov. Greg Abbot and the Commission on School Finance have made an objective of easing the states reliance on local dollars to fund schools and hope to put more state dollars back into the system.
Schebelerlie says there is going to be alot of additional potential revenue to redirect into lowering school property tax rates at the local level.
The Chamber also wants to see the State Legislature recharge the Texas Enterprise Fund, which helps lure businesses to Central Texas and Austin specifically. The fund helps close deals with companies that change and diversify local economies, Scheberlie continued, its most recent success came in the form of a new Apple campus coming to North Austin.
And lastly the chamber also wants to see Texas get back on track with state transportation funding, Scheberlie expressed optimism that this is already well underway.
The 86th session of the Texas Legislature begins Tuesday (Jan 8th).
