TravCo Commissioner worried about traffic enforcement

Traffic violators continue to worry a Travis County Commissioner.

Commissioner Brigid Shea is worried that not enough resources of the County Sheriff are going towards traffic enforcement. Sheriff Sally Hernandez seeks money in the new budget for more detectives. Shea said commissioners gave her department a lot more money last year hoping it would go towards traffic enforcement, but was told it does not.

Much of that money went to 9-1-1 operators and other expenses in the sheriff’s office. No word on if Hernandez will beef up traffic enforcement in the coming year.

“We have been publicly criticized by law enforcement, in public forums, for not having increased traffic enforcement staffing for over ten years,” said Shea.

Hernandez responded that her department did have a couple of traffic safety initiatives over the last year in the Pflugerville and Del Valle areas.

Commissioners did approve more money for three new detectives and a sergeant supervisor.
