Travis County eyeing new voter registration system

Travis County Commissioners are set to approve a new voter registration system to go with the new voting system.

The County’s Gretchen Nagy says the present system is over twenty-two years old and there were too many problems to fix. “There were a number of issues that we had with the existing system. They just weren’t going to be correctable, not easily. So, we decided to just look for a new system and see what was out there.”

Nagy says the County’s IT department will work to make the new system as secure as possible. “They are looking to be hosting it ourselves internally.” Nagy says once the system is installed they’ll test it alongside the old system starting in the Fall. “So, we’re going to have to run dual systems during the presidential primary. Then we’ll have to do some checks and balances to ensure that everything is syncing properly.”

The price tag for the new BPro Voter Registration System is around $777,000. The county will spend about that on a new e-poll book system as well.
