Thousands of names of people who may be illegally registered to vote have been delivered to officials in Travis and Williamson Counties.  They’re part of a reported 95,000 non-U.S. citizens who are on Texas’ voter rolls.  The Texas Secretary of State says as many as 58,000 have actually cast a ballot since 1996.

On Travis County, officials have been given a list of 4547 names.  In Williamson County, the number is 2033.

Meantime, civil rights groups are asking Texas officials to walk back the claim, which even prompted President Donald Trump to renew claims of rampant voter fraud.

The ACLU and a dozen other groups slammed Texas elections officials.

President Trump used the secretary of state’s announcement to tweet that “58,000 non-citizens voted in Texas.” But even Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told supporters in a fundraising email Monday that many of those people could have become citizens and voted legally.

The groups say Texas runs the risk of purging eligible voters and called the state’s method for identifying possible non-citizens “deeply flawed.”

Travis and Williamson County officials say it will take a few months before all of the names have been checked.  Any of the people who are found to be illegally registered will be given 30 days to prove their citizenship.
