Violet Bags May be the Solution to Trash in Homeless Camps

  • The City of Austin is launching a pilot program to conduct weekly trash collection services for the homeless
  • The violet bag program will take place over the next six weeks where bags will be given to the homeless so they can gather their trash to be dropped off at several locations for collection each week
  • The city, in collaboration with the Austin Watershed Department, had previously tested out a similar program and said the success of that test helped inspire the violet bag program
  • There will be four drop-off locations for trash:
  • U.S. 183 and Ohlen Road, U.S. 183 and Cameron Road, I-35 and Cesar Chavez, and Highway 71 and Pack Saddle Pass
  • The city will also try to use data gathered from 311 to find problem areas to better target the program and future programs
