KYLE, TX — Hays CISD is preparing for significant program and service reductions after voters rejected Proposition A, a proposed 12-cent property tax rate increase. Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright stated the decision forces the district to implement deep budget cuts to address its multi-million-dollar deficit.
The Deficit and the Rejection
Prop A was intended to generate $26 million in operational revenue to cover a significant shortfall, fund staff pay raises, and rebuild the district’s savings account. Dr. Wright had previously warned that a “no” vote would likely result in position cuts, larger class sizes, and the potential elimination of some student programs.
Superintendent’s Response: “This is going to hurt”
District officials, including Board Trustee Geoff Seibel, reaffirmed the severity of the situation.
“This is going to hurt and student programs and services will likely be impacted,” Seibel noted.
Dr. Wright has blamed inadequate state funding for the district’s financial woes, highlighting that the failure of Prop A means local taxpayers cannot provide the necessary support that the state has not.
Next Steps: Budget Plan Due Before Thanksgiving
Dr. Wright will now lead the administration in identifying specific areas for reduction. A revised budget cuts plan is expected to be presented to the Board of Trustees, likely before the Thanksgiving break. The exact nature of these cuts remains the central question facing the district.
