Austin’s top law enforcement officer unexpectedly found herself taking police action Thursday while visiting the city’s downtown library.
Lisa Davis was inside the Austin Central Library when she witnessed an altercation between two men, according to the Austin Police Department.
Authorities say Daniel Vasquez allegedly assaulted another man who was sitting at a computer. After the victim fell unconscious, Vasquez then reportedly began stomping his head. Chief Davis intervened and detained Vasquez until responding officers arrived.
Vasquez was then taken into custody by Austin police. The condition of the victim is not known.
While it’s not common for a police chief to personally make an arrest, the situation unfolded while Davis was already at the library and able to immediately step in.
Police have not yet released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
