APD to Resume Gun Surrender Program

Handgun and bullets

After a two-year pause due to the pandemic, the Austin Police Department will resume its Gun Surrender Program program this week with an event planned for Tuesday afternoon.  According to APD, the initiative “aims to promote responsible gun ownership, provide education on properly securing firearms, and give community members a chance to turn over unwanted guns and ammunition with no questions.”

The first event will take place on October 25, 2022, from 3-8 p.m. at the Robert Martinez, Sr. Central East Substation, 812 Springdale Rd.

If you are interested, you will need to follow some specific protocols.  They include:

  • Do not walk into the substation with a visible gun or ammunition.
  • Unload the gun.
  • Put the gun and ammunition in separate bags.
  • Leave the gun or ammunition in the car (trunk or back seat) or bagged (if on foot).
  • Tell an officer you are there to turn in a gun, and they will safely retrieve it.
