Councilmember Greg Casar defends decision to change homeless ordinances

Councilmember Greg Casar is defending the city's decision to change homeless ordinances

In a post on his facebook page a Councilmember Greg Casar points to a video by Grassroots leadership for an explanation of what the city really did when it decided to shift the focus of so called homeless ordinances to instead prohibit agressive behavior. In the video an unnamed narrator said criminalizing homelessness did nothing to help solve the homeless problem and in fact made it worse, but admits there was a backlash following the changes. While the video praised councils desision it added the city still needs to focus on creating real solutions, pushing for more shelters, more affordable housing, more funding for mental health services and safety net programs.

The Downtown Austin Alliance is hosting another meeting about the ordinances next Wednesday Aug 21st.
