Spread of zebra mussels continues

The zebra mussel problem continues to expand, not only in Austin area lakes, but lakes statewide.  Monica McGarrity with Texas Parks and Wildlife says boats are the main way these things move between bodies of water.

“Clean, drain and dry, all boats are required to do that before leaving or approaching a lake in Texas,” said McGarrity.

The tiny stripped mussels reproduce at an alarming rate, and they can clog public water pipes and kill off native species.
