Austin Public Health is expecting a wave of new covid 19 cases, following the recent mass protests.

Austin Area Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott said, when it comes down to it, diseases are passed on in person to person interactions.

While the doctor is pleased to see many protestors wearing masks, noting  that should help, but he added,  he explained there was no way for people to properly socially distance is several areas. So he is expecting the covid infection count to spike due to that, and as more businesses reopen.

“It’s important that we watch for that. Our hospital capacity is certainly in a good situation right now, so we can handle additional capacity.” said Dr. Escott.

Austin Public Health is also expecting a spike and is calling on protesters to get tested. APH’s Director Stephanie Hayden said protesters should go the APH website and themselves assessed for infection, she said, “we’d like to be proactive in this space and get you to come in and take our test.”
