GISD committee discuss security upgrades for next year

GISD's new safety and security committee meet to discuss upgrades for next year

A new 13-member safety and security committee including district officials like Superintendent Fred Brent, as well as the Chief of Police in Georgetown Wayne Nero and the Fire Chief John Sullivan has been formed. Brent recently shared with the media that along with talks about hardening the campuses themselves, the committee has also touched on individual student wellness.

Superintendent Brent also said the district is working on upgrades to radio systems and new door locks, as well as making sure all campuses have a single entry point in place for visitors.

By August 16, the district said all campuses will have just that one entrance.  Facilities executive director David Biesheuvel said work on the new doors is getting close to completion at Benold and Forbes Middle School, and the GHS Annex.

Other campuses should be done by early next month.  The entrances will include extra security in the reception area, where visitors, once approved, will be buzzed through secured doors if allowed inside.
