Citizenship question raises concerns

2020 Census form

There’s only one chance in a decade to get the Census right and thanks to a question over citizenship on the 2020 census, many are claiming that this next one will be a failure.

In March, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, announced that the Census would be asking for the citizenship status of every person living in the country as part of the 2020 decennial census in an effort to effectively enforce the Voting Rights Act.

The form has some groups worried because it could cause a large part of the population to not participate according to National Leadership Council’s Sonya Narucker.

Narucker says if there is an undercount that cause issues with the distribution of more than $800 billion a year in federal funds that state and local leaders use to provide public goods like health care, education, housing, and economic development.
